All business, if they want to be serious, need to have some faxing capability. Someone somewhere will eventually want to send you a fax or get one from you, and you will look like a fool if you state it can’t be done. When you decide on a fax machine, which one to you purchase? Sharp (an appliance and electronics company) makes several models that run the gamut on printing technologies. They’ve the older models that run on Thermal Roller toner (like Sharp’s UX 1300) or new models that send faxes and emails on the web or laser copiers that have fax capabilities.

How your machine prints on paper will greatly affect the choice you make. The technology your machine uses will influence how good the duplicates look once their printed and how much the toner costs. One type of fax machine, usually the cheap dedicated versions use thermal transfer rolls, like the UX 1300 does. They don’t make great copies, but they can get the job done like they always did and the toner doesn’t cost too much.

A newer version of fax machine is the type that prints using Inkjet ink. These run just like Inkjet printers people use at home, in fact some of those have fax abilities now. They also tend to make superior quality prints than the thermal rolls, although you shouldn’t assume that all Inkjet printers are the same. Some dedicated Inkjet faxes might not print as well as an Inkjet pic printer. Sharp makes an Inkjet fax, the UX-B20, that uses black Inkjet ink.

Laser machines are usually the ideal types of printers, even though they can get expensive. These function just like other laser printers. They use a drum and toner like other laser printing devices. A problem with these is that they have the ability to be prohibitively pricey. Make sure you can use these fax machines as reliable copier or computer printer if you are going to spend the money on this technology. They are also much more pricey for color copies.

Another thing to consider is the price of toner. Thermal transfer rolls can print around 510 pages. They can generally be cheaper than laser toner. I was able to find some toner for the UX 1300 machine on the internet for $37. These rolls are also more specialized and might be difficult to find in some stores.

Inkjet ink cartridges are also pretty cheap. I saw a cartridge for Sharp’s UXB20 sell on the web for 36.99?”the exact same price as the thermal roll. The only advantage I think the thermal roll had to the cartridge was that the Inkjet ink printed a “max” of 500 pages?”a small price to pay for a better printer, in my view.

Toner for Laser copiers and printers will be much more high-priced (cheapest at around $60, up to hundreds of dollars). They will also print thousands of pages before they’ve to be replaced, however. If you plan on making lots of duplicates or faxes then this might be the type of machine for you. It may even be cheaper in some cases when you compare cost per page, but it will be a much more massive initial investment.
