Christmas is an occasion rich in history and tradition. People around the world might celebrate this holiday in many ways yet one thing is certain, everybody is experiencing the ideal times of their life during Christmas. Most people spend it with their family and friends, enjoying each other’s companionship, reminiscing warm memories, and creating fresh ones.

They state that things, good or bad, go in threes. Christmas has lots of special traditions yet the three that are prominent are fruit cakes, Christmas trees and Christmas cards.

Each family has its individual secret recipe in creating fruit cakes that’s closely guarded and handed down from generation to generation. Around the world, fruit cakes have several varieties as the diversity in the ingredients added become apparent. In the United Kingdom, for one, fruit cakes are richer in flavor and moist in texture than their American equivalent. Fruit cakes are also a part of the UK Christmas tradition, usually coated with marzipan and royal icing. They’re then adorned with holly leaves, real or artificial berries, and other decorations commemorating Christmas.

Now, what’s Christmas if there’s no tree full of bright lights and ornaments? It is also a special Christmas tradition wherein the dads and their sons go out and pick the tree and the entire household adorns it, with the special honor granted to the youngest member of the household to put the star at the top of the tree. By tradition, the tree is set up and ornamented at Christmas Eve, December 24th and is then taken down the day following twelfth night, January 6th. Coniferous trees and evergreens are the widely used trees and the firs, spruces and pines are the three most common species.

Nevertheless, gifts and personalized Christmas cards are part of our lives. Thus, Christmas wouldn’t be perfect without giving away and receiving a Christmas token in one form or another. People spend most of their time planning what to give their relatives on this special occasion. It is also known to everybody that Christmas is the busiest shopping time of the year where people are more ready to spend in the spirit of Christmas and of giving. Business Christmas cards are handed out by huge corporations to let their customers realize how much the establishment is grateful for their loyalty and anticipate a superior relationship in the future.

These are merely three of the Christmas traditions that, whether we admit it or not, we all long for each year. After the Christmas season, after clearing out the clutter in the kitchen, after taking down the tree, we’re so eager for the subsequent Christmas to come around again.
